Your words were comforting to hear as a student teacher. My journey is just beginning, but it is nice to know what an experienced teacher thinks about classroom management. I may even start watching the dog whisperer!

I am a teacher intern and I am having my clinical observation by my content supervisor on Wednesday. I found your lesson plan very helpful and have modified it for my lesson plan for my fourth grade students. I thank you so much for the suggestions. Ironically, The story of Michael Jordan is very timely, I looked it up and his birthday is on Tuesday.

I am conducting a meeting with 11 moderated discussions and only have an average of 26 minutes per session. I want to let people know how much time we have consumed per session. Of course, we may go over or under in each session. a simple reset or some smart clock to recalculate available time remaining would be helpful. since so many scenarios are possible, I suspect I need something simple in logic and compensate with judgment. since the timer needs to work over multiple slides, I am told I need a VB addin. just want something simple to keep "time awareness" for my 11 sessions. can anyone help out? rgoodman@invatron.com with thanks.

Hi Tina I am a Teacher Candidate in Toronto On and I have become an avid Dog Whisperer fan for the same reasons you have. Although I have only complete one practice teaching so far, I quickly became aware that my students could smell fear and felt that they could take leadership because at first I was too scared to myself. I have been introduced to many of the classroom management techniques and I tried to apply them during my practicum, but none of them worked. It wasn't until I realized that I had to go into class calmly and act assertively with all of my students, that things began to improve! I was glad to have stumbled upon your message. Its nice to know that an experienced teacher feels the same way I do about managing their classroom! I'd love to hear examples of your experiences in class since watching dog whisperer!

What it means to be a literacy teacher (someday!)

As I go day by day from class to class and I begin to question why I am here doing this right now, it always comes back to one idea: I'm working toward a goal to better myself by bettering the lives of others. I want to be a teacher and I want my students to learn all that all the time I spent was in turn for them. I want my students to realize their potential through my actions. For example, my English 100 workshop students all wrote a list on the first day of class of the sacrifices they are making by being in college. But with these sacrifices they then wrote all the positives that will come from them. I seem to do this constantly to be able to see that there is that old cliché: light at the end of the tunnel. I want all of my students in the future to be able to do that same thing; to be able to find the good from the bad, see the positives in something negative. I want all of my students to know that reading is worth it and that writing is worth it too. That English will improve their lives. That will always be my ultimate goal: to have my students appreciate their knowledge of English. I’m hoping then they will realize that Disney was right: “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.”

Yes the treasures of books are endless. Although I am a techie, I do not believe anything will replace the smell of a good book. Think about it. How do we feel when we open a beloved book? Have you ever smelled that beloved book? Have you ever smelled a new book? Sounds kind of crazy but use all your senses to explore books. I don't recommend tasting, but toddlers seem to get pleasure out of tasting them. I treasure the time I get to cuddle with a great book, a cup of tea, a warm fuzzy blanket on a cool day. If only we can transfer that to students we have succeeded. Mary Lee

I hope my students will learn to appreciate some form of literature or at least be able to communicate effectively and know what they need to in order to succeed in their lives. James McCosh's quote, "The book to read is not the one which thinks for you, but the one which makes you think," really encompasses my entire view of reading. The material that gives you the answers and allows you to continue being a drone (mostly due to the human race's tendency towards laziness) is not the one which will help you the most or be the most interesting. It is the text (or movie, or song, or anything) that makes you pause and really consider something is what you should be reading. The text isn't always the same for every person, but for every person there is a text that will do this. It is only with this push or tickle in our brains that makes us explore and ponder which makes Grace Slick's quote, "Through literacy you can begin to see the universe," correct.

Words that inspire me and my teaching of literacy are, "Mrs. Studer, I don't understand." With those words I see the challenge that is paved ahead of me and the potential just waiting to be set free. Thoughts race through my mind like "I can't wait to work with that reader or writer and expose them to the strategies to understand." What really gets to me is when they finally say, "I got it." Then I know that the reader/writer will be able to use those skills to any piece of text that is in front of them, but they will remember that we did that in Mrs. Studer's class or I remember Mrs. Studer modeling that for me. My students words inspire me daily-wanting to learn and achieve more. I see them not only as my students, but like my own children sitting in front of me.

"Dogmas and formulas, those mechanical instruments for rational use (or rather misuse) of his natural endowments, are the ball and chain of his permanent immaturity." --Emmanuel Kant, "An Answer to the Question: 'What is Enlightenment?'"
I hope that my students learn about being "enlightened," mature, critical thinkers who can be change agents and courageous enough to stand up to injustices within their own classrooms and with their own writing. I hope that they will be leaders for their students and within their communities, and I hope that they inspire others to also be change agents for social justice. Edward James Olmos, like Kant, realized, "Education is a vaccine for violence," and a way for humanity to mature and develop intellectual and social skills for the benefit of everyone in society. If we are to ever have a better world, literacy surely is the key, and if I can be one small part of building safer, more socially just, and more peaceful schools, then I can die a happy and fulfilled person.

The quote that I believe teacher's who really love their profession would relate to is; "One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of house I lived in, or how much money I had in the bank, But the world may be a better place because I made a difference in a child's life" The source is unknown, but the quote sums up what I think every teacher would agree with. It is not a job that is entered into for the money, but the impact it can make is among the greatest of all professions. This quote by an unknown author is exactly how I feel about teaching. When I am gone nobody will remember what kind of car I drove or where I lived, but what I can do to a child's life may never be forgotten.

As I prepare to be a teacher, I have several things that I hope that my students learn from me. First and foremost, I hope that my students learn that language is powerful, and that its function as a tool for communication entails much more than that. I want my students to learn that their own experiences are meaningful and help to shape the way they use and interpret language. I want my students to realize that the ability to read and write is the core of everything else they study. I want students to learn that it is by reading and writing that we truly learn about ourselves and others.
"We read to know we are not alone." C.S. Lewis
This quote puts my teaching goals into perspective because I want to convey to my students that there is a reason we read the things that we read. That the characters may be fictional sometimes, but they are all experiencing things and we are experiencing things with them as we read.

Teachers today need to engage students in the processes of reading and critical thinking that they will engage in for the rest of their lives. Now that knowledge is no longer "privileged" to a hierarchical class, it will be imperative that our students know how to adjust to this means of sharing knowledge globally and in a collective fashion.

When I think about becoming a teacher, I think about my old teachers and what they taught me or what they made me hate. The majority of my English teachers made the subject seem so mundane and kind of "blah!" Yet, my passion still prevailed through the years of busy work and laziness. That experience, while I wished I would have had more insightful teachers, has taught me that I want my students to learn that English can be fun. Whenever I share my major with people, most huff and role their eyes and comment on how they hate English. I want my students to learn that while at times difficult, English classes open up possibilities and teach them valuable skills.
When I hear words like passion, determination, inspiration, time management, devotion, and love I think of my future career. I know that it will take much patience to be a teacher and flexibility in terms of schedules and deadlines is a must, but I feel prepared. Having a passion for the English Language has given me the determination to get myself through school, fuled the inspiration that I hope to pass on to my students, shown me how to be responsible with my time, informed me that I must give all that I have every day on the job, and that loving what I do, a qulaity so rarely found in society today, is going to be my reward.
"One hudnred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, or how much money I had in the bank, but the world may be a better place because I made a difference in a child's life." This quote supports my goals as a teacher because I want others to feel the passion that I have for writing, I want to help others realize that they can do whatever they set their minds to, and that education is the key to success.
