Beyond Standards: Excellence in the High School English Classroom by Carol JagoThis is a featured page

Jago, Carol. Beyond Standards: Excellence in the High School English Classroom. Portsmouth, NH: Boynton/Cook, 2001. Jago's book is a practical and exciting book of ideas for English teachers. These are not abstractions or theories, but have actually been attempted in her classroom. The book is easy to follow, fun to read, and has good ideas. An example is the "designated listener," based on the idea of the designated driver, to add a new slant to peer response (9). Jago's purpose is to get teachers to go beyond the written standards and to get students excited about reading and writing. Chapters are concise (the whole book is only 103 pages) and touch on important issues such as revising and research. Contributed by Pat Smith 2001 Invitational Participant.
