Smagorinsky, Peter, Tom McCann and Stephen Kern. Explorations: Introductory Activities for Literature and Composition, 7-12. Urbana, IL: ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading and Communications Skills, NCTE, 1987. This book, as the title suggests, offers a wealth of exploration in practice to develop sound skills. Activities promote reading comprehension and introductory writing both as separate tasks as well as in conjunction with one another. Some suggestions are made for specific literary pieces, but the focus is mostly on general but important questions such as how to relate your own experiences to a literary work by writing first then reading. Contributed by Jeanne Rost, 1987 Invitational Participant.
