Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Me [1,038 Kb PDF - Grade 8]

Since I use a lot of group work in my class, I think this would be a good lesson to use in middle school or high school Language Arts (see pages 218-234). The lesson divides students into groups who do a webquest researching the impact of racist images and segregation laws on the past and the resounding effects they have today. Each student is assigned a certain role such as historian or psychologist and will research according to his/her role. This is a great way to implement differentiated instruction. It also encourages the use of various types of research including books, internet, interviews, films, etc. After researching independently, they come back together as a group and discuss their findings. Each member then uses the information found relevant by the group to write a paper complete with citations. Finally, the group will make a collective presentation such as a storyboard on power point to present to the class.
