Reading 1. Develop & Apply skills and strategies to the reading process. – English I, II, III, IV
C- Phonics Locate unknown words in stories, headline, picture captions and the comics, and apply decoding strategies to problem solve to determine pronunciation and meaning when needed.
D – Fluency Read grade level newspaper text with fluency, accuracy and expression, adjusting reading rate to difficulty and type of text.
E- Vocabulary Read grade level newspaper text to assist in developing vocabulary through roots and affixes, and context clues. Use glossary, dictionary, and thesaurus as needed.
F- Pre-Reading Use grade level newspaper text to apply pre-reading strategies to aid comprehension, access prior knowledge, preview, predict with evidence and set a purpose for reading.
G- During Reading During newspaper reading, utilize strategies to determine meaning of unknown words, monitor comprehension, question the text and make inferences. Use skills to visualize, paraphrase and summarize events.
H – Post Reading Apply post-reading skills to comprehend and interpret, analyze, and evaluate text: question to clarify, reflect, summarize, paraphrase, and draw conclusions.
I- Making Connections Have students compare, contrast and analyze connections between newspaper (non-fiction) stories and fiction (text to text) and the relevance of news items to their world (text to self). Have students analyze and evaluate the relationship between newspapers and their historical period and culture (text to world).
2. & 3. Develop and apply skills and strategies to comprehend, analyze and evaluate fiction/ nonfiction (newspapers) …..
A- Text Features – English I, II, III, IV Analyze and evaluate the writer’s use of text features to clarify meaning, in grade-level newspaper text.
B – Literary Techniques English I - Identify, explain and analyze newspaper writing techniques including figurative language and sound devices previously introduced emphasizing irony, imagery, repeated sound, line or phrase. English II - Identify, explain and analyze newspaper writing techniques including figurative language and sound devices previously introduced emphasizing understatement, parallelism, allusion and analogy. English III - Identify, explain and analyze newspaper writing techniques including figurative language and sound devices previously introduced emphasizing euphemism and satire. English IV – Analyze and evaluate literature techniques including figurative language and sound devices.
C-Literary Elements English I – Use details from a news story to analyze character, plot, setting, and point of view. Analyze the development of a theme to evaluate the effect of writer’s style. English II - Use details from a news story to analyze character, plot, setting, and point of view. Analyze the development of a theme to evaluate the effect of tone. English III & IV - Use details from a news story to analyze character, plot, setting, and point of view. Analyze the development of a theme to evaluate the effect of tone on the overall meaning of the story.
C - Text Structures English I – Use details from informational text (newspapers) to: identify and explain the organizational pattern; analyze and evaluate effectiveness or word choice; analyze and evaluate the accuracy of evidence; and analyze and evaluate point of view. English II - Use details from informational text (newspapers) to: analyze and evaluate the organizational patterns; identify and analyze faulty reasoning and unfounded inferences; evaluate proposed solutions; evaluate for accuracy and adequacy of evidence; evaluate effect of tone on the overall meaning of work; and analyze and evaluate point of view. English III & IV – Use details from argumentative texts (letters to the editor, political cartoons, editorials and It’s Your Call ) to analyze and evaluate the organizational patterns, ; identify and analyze faulty reasoning and unfounded inferences; evaluate proposed solutions; evaluate for accuracy and adequacy of evidence; analyze and evaluate the type of appeal (emotional, ethical, and logical) ; evaluate effect of tone on the overall meaning of the work; and analyze and evaluate point of view.
D – Understanding Directions – English I, II, III, IV Using feature (soft news) article information; read and apply multi-step directions to perform complex procedures and/or tasks. Examples: Construct a craft item, use a recipe to bake something, solve a puzzle, etc. Writing 1. Apply a writing process in composing text. English I - Write a news article, feature story or sport’s story. The writing process should include; use of appropriate prewriting strategies as needed; generating a draft; revise in response to feedback (peer/an or teacher); edit for conventions (W2E) and publish writing. English II, III, IV Apply a writing process to write effectively in various forms and types of newspaper writing (W3A).
2. Compose well-developed text A – Audience and purpose - English I, II, III, IV Write a feature (soft news) article showing awareness of audience and choosing a form and point of view appropriate to purpose and audience. B- Ideas and content – English I, II, III, IV Write an editorial using a strong, controlling idea, with relevant, specific details, complex ideas, and freshness of thought. C – Organization and Sentence Structure – English I, II, III, IV Write a news or feature story including: an effective beginning, middle and end; a logical order; effective paragraphing; cohesive devices; varied sentence structure; clarity of expression; and active voice. D – Word Choice English I & II - Write newspaper text, including a comic strip, using precise and vivid language and use writing techniques including humor, voice and figurative language. English III & IV - Write newspaper text, including a comic strip, using precise and vivid language and use writing techniques including humor, voice and figurative language and rhetorical devices. E- Conventions – English I, II, III, IV Write newspaper text (stories, articles, letters, editorials, etc.). Use the following writing conventions: Capitalization, punctuation, and standard usage.
3. Write effectively in various forms and types of writing A – Forms/ Types/ Modes of Writing – English I, II, III, IV Compose a variety of newspaper texts, including weather forecasts, ads, comics, headlines, recipes, movie listings, letters, etc, using narrative, descriptive, expository, and/or persuasive features, in various formats. Include a workplace communication (employment application letter) from a classified ad job listing. Include the techniques of summary, literary analysis and reflective writing.
